About Visual Routines

Provide structure and predictability with a visual routine

Visual routines (or visual schedules) are a tool that combines a visual cue with an activity. Children of all types benefit greatly from structure and value knowing what is expected and what is coming next. In particular, children who have attention, behavioral, or cognitive challenges can benefit from having common routines represented visually. Caregivers of individuals who are autistic, have ADHD, Down syndrome, or just have difficulty staying on task or transitioning can benefit by incorporating visual routines into their daily activities.

Traditional visual routines are difficult to incorporate into a child’s day to day activities. Traditional poster board schedules take a considerable amount of time to prepare and maintain. Apps such as Routinely make it much easier to make visual routines a normal part of our children’s lives. You can quickly get the pictures you need and have routines available at any time.
